A Woman’s Chapters

on

In my earliest chapters, I have been taught
A young maiden should be clean,
House chores are her field of expert
the front porch defines you my dear

In my younger chapters, I have been warned
Your skirt matches your behavior
A woman’s place is beside her man
Your breasts shall carry your man
And your back is for your children

In my deep old chapters, I have been told
Be silent please, your man is speaking
Cover that head of yours, your man is looking
Your food you will get to eat, when your man has finished

In my current chapters, I get to say
Life is how I make it, my man is not my maker
A child? Perhaps someday, a woman’s place
Is the grounds she chooses
